Summer Sounds in Catania: Unmissable Live Music at Villa Bellini

Catania knows how to stage a summer. While the rest of Sicily slows to a siesta rhythm, the city at the foot of Etna turns its most beautiful green space — Villa Bellini, the grand nineteenth-century garden that climbs in terraces above Via Etnea — into one of the best open-air venues in the south. The palm avenues, the bandstand elegance, the volcano silhouetted behind the stage: it is a setting that flatters every act that plays it, and the coming weeks bring four very good reasons to be there. First, on Thursday 23 July, Frah Quintale arrives with his Summer Tour '26. His mix of laid-back rap, soul and heart-on-sleeve pop has made him one of the defining voices of young Italy, and his shows have the loose, joyful feel of a rooftop party that got wonderfully out of hand. In the soft heat of a Catania July night, surrounded by palms, his songs should feel entirely at home. Then, on Sunday 2 August, comes the heavyweight booking of the season: Subsonica, playing "Terre Rare 96 - 26" as part of Sotto il Vulcano Fest. Three decades on from their debut, the Turin electro-rock institution remains one of the most formidable live bands in the country — a churning, hypnotic machine of synths, guitars and Samuel's unmistakable voice. The show marks thirty years of a career that changed Italian alternative music, and festival sets like this one, under an actual volcano for a festival literally named "Under the Volcano", have a way of becoming the stuff of local legend. The Villa Bellini season does not end with August, either. On Saturday 12 September, C.S.I. — Consorzio Suonatori Indipendenti, the legendary collective born from the ashes of CCCP — bring their intense, uncompromising art-rock to the garden. For a certain generation of Italian music lovers, C.S.I. are sacred ground; if you have never seen them, this is the kind of chance that does not come around often, and certainly not in a setting like this. And then, a week later on Saturday 19 September, comes the great crowd-pleaser: Gianni Morandi, with "C'era un ragazzo Estate 2026". Sixty years into one of the most extraordinary careers in Italian entertainment, Morandi remains an irresistible live performer — all energy, warmth and songs that three generations can sing from memory. From "Fatti mandare dalla mamma" onwards, the setlist is essentially the soundtrack of modern Italy, and the Villa Bellini crowd will know every word. Four nights, four completely different corners of Italian music — from trap-adjacent pop to electro-rock, from post-punk royalty to the eternal ragazzo — all in the same garden. That is a season. A practical note for visitors: Villa Bellini sits right on Via Etnea, Catania's great central artery, which means the pre- and post-show hours take care of themselves. Arrive early for a granita at one of the historic cafes, wander the fish-market lanes around Piazza del Duomo before the light goes, and if you are staying over, the morning ferry of choice is a hike — or at least a cable-car ride — up Etna itself.
